A RURAL community sacrificed a model pylon on their bonfire in protest against the "steel monstrosities" planned for their community.
While some burn a Guy Fawkes on their bonfire, the community at The Green, Thwaites, created a wooden pylon and set it alight to show their strength of feeling.
People across the Duddon Valley and Furness are campaigning against National Grid's controversial plans to install 50m electricity pylons through the Furness peninsula.
Powerlines from west Cumbria to Lancashire will connect the proposed Moorside nuclear power plant to the National Grid.
The communities want to see an extension of underground cabling, like the Lake District National Park is to have, rather than 400kV overhead lines passing through south Copeland and into Furness, through Ireleth, Lindal, Dalton, Newton and Roosecote.
David Savage is the leader of Millom Without Parish Council and also of the parish council co-ordination group, a group of 16 parish councils along the pylon route who have got together to fight the pylon plans.
Councillor Savage said: “The pylon effigy was built by Millom Without parish councillors and community volunteers to make a key statement that we want a pylon-free community.”
Graham Barron, secretary of the Power Without Pylons pressure group at Kirkby, said: “This demonstrates the strength of feeling at The Green about these steel monstrosities that National Grid is intending to inflict upon us all around the Duddon Estuary and beyond.”
National Grid is running a consultation about its plans until January 6 2017.
An anti-pylon meeting is taking place at Thwaites Village Hall, on Friday from 7pm. It is hoped that Copeland MP Jamie Reed and Copeland mayor, Mike Starkie will attend.
