Primary School students celebrated World Ocean Day by cleaning up the beaches close to their classrooms.

Captain Shaw's Church of England School on Main Street in Millom went out in groups to clean up Bootle beach on Wednesday 8 June for World Oceans Day.

Being a school on the coast, the pupils felt a duty not only celebrate World Ocean Day but to do something positive, to have an impact on the coast line and for the local community.

After much discussion the children decided a beach clean was the best way for the school to make a positive impression on the environment.

Copeland council were eager to help and they provided the children with litter pickers and bags.

The children had great fun working together to clean up the beach and learned a lot about the importance of keeping Britain's beaches in good condition.

Captain Shaw's head teacher Peter Mills said: "After much discussion we found it difficult to decide how we felt after our mornings work. In one sense we were all very happy that we had helped to make Bootle beach a cleaner place but at the same time it made the children feel a little sad that people had caused such a mess in the first place."
