TEARS of joy and excited screams could he heard in the main hall of Millom School as pupils celebrated months of hard work as they received their exam results.

More than 97 per cent of the school's Year 11 pupils achieved good results in English and maths, bagging at least five A*-G grades.

One of the school's most impressive set of results came from Amber Whyte who managed a clean sweep, scoring eight out of eight A* grades.

The 16-year-old said: "I was quite nervous this morning and I am hoping to study all the sciences and maths and would like to go into medicine.

"I'm really happy and so is my mum. One of my little sisters will be doing her GCSEs next year so no pressure."

Headteacher Matt Savidge was thrilled with the performance of all his pupils.

He said: "I am delighted with such a fantastic set of GCSE results with two-thirds of students achieving at least a grade C in English and maths.

"It has been a great pleasure working with these students over the last year and they have been rewarded for their commitment and effort.

"I would like to congratulate all of our students on their individual performances."

Despite national figures suggesting that girls may have outshone boys, Alfie Sharp and Tom Huddleston bagged excellent A-C results and both decided to continue their studies with Millom School sixth form.

Alfie, who got an A in French, said: "My results are better than I expected. I felt sick and didn't know what to expect but the teachers have been very supportive."

Tom will also be joining the sixth form in September and hopes to study physics and chemistry.

Professor Colin Richards, chairman of the governors, said: "I continue to be proud to be associated with Millom School and the community and on behalf of the governing body I would like to congratulate all students and wish them success for the future."
