A PRISONER has been left with serious burns after a fire broke out in a cell at HMP Haverigg.
The incident happened yesterday, just after 4.30am.
A fire was started in one of the cells at the prison and the inmate suffered serious burns.
The prisoner, understood to be in his 50s, was treated with oxygen therapy at the scene before being taken to Furness General Hospital.
He was later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital. No prison staff are believed to have been injured in the incident.
A Prison Service spokesman told the Evening Mail: "Prison staff at HMP Haverigg extinguished a cell fire on Tuesday November 29.
"A prisoner was taken to hospital and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening."
