Primary school children have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication to green-fingered excellence with a regional award and prize money.
The environmentally friendly pupils from Dane Ghyll School in Barrow are celebrating after being highly commended for their entry to the Total Green School Awards. Their project ‘Vegetable Gardening’ was runner up in the category from schools in northern England.
The Total Green School Awards is a nationwide competition for five-11 year-olds, which
is run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment.
The competition, which aims to generate interest in the environment and raise awareness
of the need for sustainable energy sources, has received entries from almost 34,000
schoolchildren.
The children of Dane Ghyll School produced a beautifully written and illustrated booklet
about their school garden. It contained pictures of the fantastic range of
activities they have been involved in, such as growing their own vegetables and then
preparing them to be enjoyed in their school dinners.
There was also a report on the homemade compost the children had worked on, the wormery they have created and a fantastic range of bird feeders.
The school said it was wonderful to see so many lovely photographs of the children actively and
enthusiastically involved in their school garden and clearly having lots of fun.
The school will be presented with a certificate and a cheque for £250 to recognise their
achievements.
