A VILLAGE hall has officially reopened its tennis courts after a major refurbishment project.

Thwaites Village Hall opened the site on Friday night, with big plans for the future.

Alan Park, chairman of the hall, said: "We're really pleased. I think it's a fantastic facility and now, hopefully, the whole community can use it.

"We really want to encourage the youngsters to use it and get them up doing something and off their iPads.

"We're hoping to get a tennis club up and running and we're really looking forward to it.

Local coach and secretary of Millom Tennis Club, Dave Billing, said: "I remember when the courts were first built and they got used quite a lot.

"It's fabulous that the group here have got the money together to refurbish them.

"The beauty of them now is that you can play all year round on this surface. There's opportunity to get the juniors involved on the smaller courts so hopefully we can start involving the local schools and we can build it from here."

The group was helped by a £12,000 grant from Tesco's Bags of Help scheme in the town.
