A MOVING memorial to those who died in one of history's bloodiest battles will be heading to a popular museum in Cumbria.

Cumbria's Museum of Military Life has dedicated this year to remembering those who died in the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago.

As part of its coverage, the Carlisle museum has chosen a number of venues across the county to visit, including Millom Discovery Centre.

This visit offers people across the area to find out more about the battle and discover any family connections.

In addition to a whole host of fascinating activities, the event enables residents to handle World War One artefacts and get help and advice with tracking their family history.

Event organisers are also keen to meet anyone who may have any pictures or letters that tell the harrowing tale of the Battle of the Somme.

Jill Mojonnier, one of the directors of Millom Discovery Centre, is urging people to come along.

She said: "This was the biggest and worst battle of World War One. "People died and gave their lives and if they hadn't, where would this country be now?

"It was a sacrifice that the whole nation made - not just the men that fought but also the people at home.

"We can't just ignore and forget what happened."

The event will take place at Millom Discovery Centre on Saturday September 17 between 11am and 3pm.
