THE future of an iconic building is soon to be decided as it is put up for auction.

Millom’s Clock Tower will go up for auction later this month at a starting price of £95,000.

The property has been a landmark in the town since its construction and has recently been transformed into a lucrative business.

Larry Mackie However businessman Larry Mackie, who owns many of the town’s businesses, has decided to retire to spend more time at his second home in Spain.

The 56-year-old said: “I’m looking to retire and just want to take a bit of time off. I’ve got a house in Spain, near Alicante so it would be nice to spend a bit more time there.” Mr Mackie owns a small business empire that comprises the Curry Spice, The Hair Gallery and The Bear on the Square, all of which are also up for sale.

Despite these sales, Mr Mackie believes the future of the businesses will continue to operate under the same guise.

He said: “This is the only nightclub in Millom – the town needs it.

“The restaurant is important as well as there’s nothing else like it for miles around and it’s doing good, very good.”

The Clock Tower will go to auction at 6.30pm on Thursday February 18 at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston.

The property has already received some interest through a number of viewings and Mr Mackie is hoping whoever is successful will keep all the businesses going.

He said: “I would certainly like it to carry on the same.

“I’ve got around 30 people who have been working there for 20 years. I’ve had the restaurant for three or four years, the Bear on the Square for 21 years and the rest for 14 so it means a lot.”

In addition to owning a large proportion of properties in Market Square, Mr Mackie is also landlord of a number of the town’s houses.

He said: “It just seemed to have built up over the years – it’s been brilliant.

“I am very proud. When it comes to our Christmas parties and I see how many people I work with it makes me feel proud.”

As he finally prepares to wave goodbye to his best-known asset later this month, Mr Mackie reflects on his career in Millom with fond memories.

He said: “I was born in Haverigg so I’ve spent most of my time here. This was my life and my livelihood.

“Millom is home to my family, my grandchildren and everything else.”
