THE heartbroken family of a man who has lost his battle against cancer have thanked the community for their support.

Former rugby player and firefighter Glyn Robinson, 45, died in the early hours of yesterday at his home in Millom, surrounded by his family.

He had been undergoing intense treatment for an inoperable brain tumour.

His sister-in-law, Tracey Clark, speaking to the Evening Mail on behalf of the family, said: "He died peacefully and we were all by his bedside.

"We have had so many messages since it happened. I'd like to say thank you as it does help to know that we are in people's thoughts."

Mr Robinson was well known in the community having served as a fire fighter in Bootle as well as playing rugby for both Barrow and Millom.

Although the treatment made simple tasks such as making a cup of tea difficult, Mr Robinson never let his spirits slide.

In June, he became the centre of attention after the people of Millom joined forces to complete a surprise garden makeover, including the creation of a 'mancave;' a summerhouse which was decked out in his favourite things.

Mr Robinson's best friend, Paul Roskell said: "I'm just in total shock. We knew it was going to happen one day.

"I can't think what to say, he was a true friend."

"He was a well-known man around the area, people knew him from all over. Because of his rugby days he even had friends in Australia."

"He has always been a true character, he always had a smile on his face, he always put others before himself."
