A WOMAN who brightens up a town every year by organising an annual festival in Millom has been surprised with the Evening Mail's Bouquet of the Week.

Councillor Felicity Wilson, who represents Newtown ward on Copeland Borough Council and Millom Town Council, was nominated for all her work in putting on Millom's Christmas Tree Festival.

Every year, Cllr Wilson sprinkles festive magic at the festival and takes great pride in setting up the displays for members of the public to browse and appreciate.

The most recent edition brought together groups, community associations and schools who decorated trees and put them on show in the old Co-op building in Wellington Street from December 10 to January 5.

The festival, which has been going for six years, proved to be a big success and helped spread some Christmas cheer in the town.

Speaking about being nominated for the Bouquet of the Week, Cllr Wilson, who lives in Haverigg, said: "It's so lovely.

"The thing I feel strongly about is it's for the people to enjoy. It's to brighten their lives and it certainly did that.

"Local groups, individuals and schools created their own trees and it's been really lovely.

"It was a lovely atmosphere. Wellington Street looked bright and festive and it was easy for people to go past and look at them.

"We have had a lot of positive comments."

Fundraising pots were put in lots of town centre businesses and buildings during the festival to raise money for good causes.

Cllr Wilson is already looking to the next edition and hopes to return to the festival's former home at St George's Church.

The church was unable in December and January after asbestos was discovered in between the pipes of its 150-year-old heating system .

She said: "I do hope that this year we will be back in St George's."

Cllr Wilson was nominated for the Bouquet of the Week by a Millom resident anonymously who said: "[Felicity] does a great deal for the Millom Community.

"This is the sixth year she has created the highly popular Christmas Tree Festival in Millom."
