A GROUP of Millom cyclists worked as a team to successfully complete a coast to coast challenge.

Millom School's BeSpoke cycling club conquered the 140mile C2C route from Whitehaven to Sunderland last week.

The 12 students and five bike club volunteers, including group leader and teacher, Siobhan Johnston, marked the end of their trip by dipped their wheels in the North Sea.

The group, wearing jerseys they had designed, looked like a professional team, riding in group formations and supporting one another.

The ride took them over road and off-road terrain, climbing some of the highest points on UK cycle routes, including Black Hill at 1,998ft and Hartside at 1,904ft altitude, from Monday to Friday last week.

Students camped along the way, setting up their tents and equipment each evening.

Mrs Johnston said: "They stuck together on every climb and demonstrated excellent teamwork throughout.

"Well done to everyone who took part and many thanks to the club volunteers for their time and effort in running the trip."

The BeSpoke biking group was established to encourage students to engage in mechanics, engineering, independence and physical exercise. The students and volunteers restore bikes donated by the local community and transform them into bikes capable of being used on an adventure like the C2C.
