Millom construction firm praised for flood help

A CONSTRUCTION firm received glowing praise for its "tremendous" help in a flood-devastated Lake District village.

Staff at Beckside Construction Ltd, which is based in the Whicham Valley, Millom, rushed to the aid of residents in the Ullswater village of Glenridding earlier this week.

Around 30 homes in Glenridding and the surrounding area were flooded, as were many business premises, when the main beck burst its banks.

That unleashed a torrent of water which left a trail of destruction in its wake.

But help arrived in the form of Beckside, which has been working in the Ullswater area on a hydro-electric scheme for the National Trust.

Beckside managing director Robert Morris-Eyton arrived in Glenridding on Monday along with his son, Patrick, and colleague Robert Butler.

A 20-tonne excavator was used to clear thousands of tonnes of gravel from the choked beck.

This was then diverted back on to its usual course.

"The locals were absolutely tremendous. They kept us supplied with teas and coffees and food - it was much appreciated," said Mr Morris-Eyton senior.

"They were looking after us and doing their best to help. We were also very happy to help with our equipment to do a task which they were struggling to do themselves."
