GOOD causes were given a welcome boost thanks to a town's outgoing mayor.
Councillor Doug Wilson held a presentation evening for his chosen charities and organisations. The attendees included people from the recipient organisations plus supporters and helpers during Cllr Wilson's mayoral year.
Grants were handed to:
Millom Clock Trust, £1,000
Millom Pensioners Association, £1,000
Millom War Memorial Fund, £1,000
Millom Swimming Pool Fighting Fund, £1,000
Haverigg Beach Buddies, £500
Local area enhancements, £350
Among Cllr Wilson's audience of more than 70 people on Thursday included local MP Trudy Harrison and her husband Keith.
He said: "The money donated to the clock trust will ensure that funding is secured for future maintenance and repair."
The War Memorial Fund received one of the highest donations.
Cllr Wilson said: "This important part of the town’s heritage needs preserving to ensure that those who gave so much will not be forgotten.
"There is now a hardworking local group pulling together to make sure this happens. They deserve our support."
The money pledged to the swimming pool fund will help the campaign for a new pool for the people of Millom.
Cllr Wilson has sought to improve the local environment in Millom in a number of ways, including revamping the Palladium Gardens.
He said: "Thanks must got to Sellafield Apprentice Team who have provided effort and supervision at our request for the upgrading of the Palladium Park."
Mr Wilson said he would like to thank the many people and businesses who have supported him throughout the year.
