HOSPITAL bosses have vowed to take action after a community hospital failed to achieve a perfect food hygiene review.

Millom Community Hospital, on Lapstone Road, was rated as "generally satisfactory" by inspectors after the unannounced visit on March 19.

The hospital is now governed by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

Foluke Ajayi, chief operating officer, said: "We take the hygiene standards of our kitchens and restaurants very seriously and this is reflected in our current five star ratings at both Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital and four star rating at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary due to ongoing building works.

"We will work with the teams at Millom Hospital to continue the improvements to ensure we receive a higher rating at the next inspection which is due shortly."

UHMBT recently took charge of the hospital after the transfer from Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

A spokesperson for CPFT, who operated the hospital until April 1, said: "Millom Hospital is no longer the responsibility of CPFT, but at the time of the inspection it was.

"Since the Environmental Health visit in March staff at Millom Hospital have undergone refresher training in all aspects of health and safety.

"A rolling programme of training is now in place to ensure that staff are kept up to date with the latest advice and so that standards improve."

Muncaster Castle were also handed a rating of three out of five following their inspection on March 27.

Last weekend, the castle hosted their fourth annual Cumberland Sausage Festival in the grounds, with an estimated 4,000 visitors flocking to the site.

A spokesperson for the castle has been contacted for comment.

Inspectors examine the management and hygienic food preparation and storage on site.

Copeland Borough Council carry out the unannounced inspections as part of their regular reviews in the area.
