GIRL Guides rolled up their sleeves to clean up their community as they took part in the Big Clean campaign 2016.

The Trinity Girl Guides and Senior Section were keen to get involved in the Evening Mail's Big Clean again this year as they have been enthusiastic participants for the last few years.

For their 2016 clean-up the Girl Guides agreed that they would tackle an area nominated by the public. People got in touch via social media and an online vote and it was decided that the Girl Guides, along with their leader and district commissioner, Susan Benson, would tackle Ormsgill Reservoir.

The Girl Guides met at 7.30pm on a very pleasant summer evening at the playing fields in Schneider Road.

Mrs Benson said: "The girls all really enjoyed the Big Clean. They were very enthusiastic to get involved as an important part of being a member of Girlguiding is giving service. Helping to clean up our town is a good way for girls to serve the community they live in.

"We had a lovely sunny evening for the clean and we had a selection of girls there from our junior and senior sections so they were between the ages of 10 and 15.

"The girls went out in groups of three and actually we were surprised to find that the reservoir was not as dirty as we had expected.

"The most unusual item we found was an old shopping trolley and the evening was a success because the girls could see the difference they had made."

Girlguiding is a wonderful way for young ladies to get together, make friends and learn skills and the Trinity guides were an excellent representation of that spirit during the Big Clean.
