The Evening Mail Big Clean 2016 has got off to a great start, with groups stepping forward from across the Furness peninsula to lend their services to tidying up our community.

Now we need YOUR HELP to keep groups motivated and out scouring the beaches and streets for litter and discarded objects. We have already had odd objects such as tents and tyres turning up on Barrow Island, so please help us keep hunting.

This year the Barrow Trinity Girl Guides will once again lend a hand to the Big Clean, after being heavily involved in the past.

Last year the girls, along with their leader Susan Benson, tackled an area of beach near Rampside, which was greatly in need of some tender loving care. They were directed to the beach by the Evening Mail's Big Clean team, who had been informed of the beach's unsightly state.

The group made a huge difference to cleaning up the area and have already planned to stage another Big Clean this May. The Guides will kindly give their time to put in the muscle work but we need suggestions from the people of Barrow and the surrounding area to get involved and suggest areas that are most in need of the Trinity young ladies' attention.

Mrs Benson, Trinity Girl Guides Leader and District Comissioner for the girl guides said: “An important part of being a member of the Guides is giving service. Helping to clean up our town is a good way for girls to serve the community they live in.

"As we pick up litter, we can see the difference we are making immediately. We all need to take more pride in the town we live in. Helping to clean up an area of Barrow encourages my Guides to do that and to see that what they do can make a difference.”

The public is urged to suggest beaches, bridle paths, play areas or anywhere in the Barrow area that you think would benefit from some Big Clean action.

If you have an area in mind that you care about and think would benefit from litter picking and a full morning of cleaning please contact Evening Mail Big Clean organiser Gabrielle Rowley at: gabrielle.rowley@nwemail.co.uk or call (01229) 840162.
