Zookeepers from South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton were on the hunt for a lemur this morning after eyewitnesses believed they had spotted the animal on the side of the A590.
Staff at the animal park have now confirmed keepers who attended the scene found a dead badger.
An eyewitness said: "We were driving down the road and saw what we thought looked like a lemur on the side of the road. We thought it was a badger at first but as we got closer we thought it was something else. It wasn't moving."
A spokeswoman from the animal park said this morning: "We are aware of the situation and our keepers are already out looking for it."
