A COMMEMORATIVE stone laying will take place later this month in memory of a First World War Victoria Cross hero.

Thomas Fetcher Mayson, originally from Silecroft, near Millom, was awarded the VC on July 31, 1917.

The medal is the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

The commemorative stone laying will take place on Sunday July 30 from 11am at Silecroft War Memorial.

Lance Sergeant Mayson, who served with the King's Own Royal Regiment, was born in 1893 and died aged 64 in 1958.

There will be a short service for the laying of the stone, which will be followed by light refreshments.
