THE generosity of a community has been praised by a local charity as it continues its bid to feed hungry people across the area.

Tesco in Millom is urging people to give generously as it joins stores across the nation to collect food for local foodbanks.

This week Tesco stores across the nation will be boosting food donations by 20 per cent and Tony Woodward, co-ordinator of Millom Foodbank, believes it's more important than ever to support people in our communities.

He said: "The food that was collected at Christmas is starting to get low after helping numerous families across the area.

"Now we need as much support as we can get from the public - we're always in need of volunteers as well."

All this week, stores across South Cumbria will be adding to food that is donated to try and bolster supplies and once again, the foodbank is calling on the generosity of Millom people.

Mr Woodward said: "Millom people look after Millom people. They are quite generous in that respect and I think we're very fortunate in Millom to have that support in the town, but we do need more."

Maxine Lawford, community champion for Tesco in Millom, agreed saying:

People have until Saturday to drop off their donations which will be boosted by 20 per cent by Tesco.

Mrs Lawford said:

In a desperate bid to appeal to the kind-hearted people of Millom, Mr Woodward said: "Our stock are getting pretty low. All the stuff we got at Christmas is getting very low.

"We're always short of things like meat, milk, pasta sauces - all stuff that helps bulk out a meal.

"The support we get is great and we're very fortunate that we've got good people in the town and good local stores as well."
