PLANS to protect Cumbria from towering pylons have taken an unexpected turn as two major development ideas come together.

People across the area will be attending a special meeting tomorrow night to discuss the possibility of building a bridge across the Duddon.

The idea of a bridge across the bay has been discussed for many years but plans have picked up pace as the campaign against the pylons hots up.

Campaigners are calling for the bridge to be built across the Duddon Estuary to carry the cables that will conduct power from Moorside and save the landscape from almost 50-metre high pylons.

The bridge will also act as a barrage to generate energy from tidal power, in addition to a road to cut down journey times.

People have long supported plans for the bridge to improve access to Barrow and the rest of the North West and now campaigners hope this will provide an alternative for pylons.

Residents across the area are now being invited to attend a meeting at Millom Workies tonight (Wednesday) at 7.00pm for a 7.30 start.

Elected mayor of Copeland Mike Starkie will be attending in addition to representatives from North West Energy Squared, the company who will be delivering the scheme.
