ADVENTUROUS Captain Shaw pupils have welcomed a new Roald Dahl-inspired play park, designed by one of their very own class mates.

Children at the Bootle primary were asked to design their school's new tyre park in April this year.

Competition winner, Arianne Sullivan-Appleton, seven, impressed teachers and classmates with her design called "The Willy Wonka" which was fitted in June.

Headteacher Pete Mills said: "It was a really positive experience for everyone involved and the children really enjoyed it."

All pupils involved in the design of the new play area were then asked to help their teachers choose the most unique winner.

"Arianne's design was the most unique and the most creative.

"You actually need a drone to see the full effect but its a man holding a lollipop.

"We had just been studying Roald Dahl so I think her design stems from that," said Mr Mills.

The year one pupil was the only entrant to design a park designed on a person, rather than using geometric shapes or symmetry.

"We had lots of patterns but she was the only one who made it so unique," said Mr Mills.

Outdoor-play specialists Tyre Parks created the design brief for the primary school and staff decided it should be left to pupils across Early Years and Key Stage One to make the final decision.

Pupils had only 15 pieces to work with, ranging from full and half tyres.

"The company said the kids should design it and we just thought it was a brilliant idea," added Mr Mills.

The official opening of the adventure play park was last month.
