THE largest development of new homes in a Cumbrian village since the 1960s was revealed to residents today.

Local firm Holker Group is behind the scheme to construct 50 houses on land near Kirkby's Burlington Church of England Primary School and beside the A595.

The development is believed to be the largest in the village since the construction of Burlington Close in the 1960s.

Rachel Bagshaw, group property manager for Holker Group, said the group will meet its affordable housing quota for the development.

Residents were given the opportunity to see the plans in a consultation earlier this week.

She said: "We are very excited to be part of this. The parish council's own strategy plan identifies the need for affordable housing and family housing to help support the local school, and the development is designed to meet those identified needs.

"At present we're proposing 50 units but the purpose of the consultation exercise is to understand the local issues, and this may necessitate a reduction of units.

"The business plan for this development aims to provide the full affordable housing quota for the site, so 50 units will provide around 17 affordable units."

The group hopes to submit the application for planning permission later this year, with the chairman of the Kirkby and Ireleth Parish Council, Michael McPerson, saying residents would be consulted before concrete conclusions were reached.
