TOWN councillors are calling for action to ensure vital repairs are made to the area’s road network.

A discussion about the “disgraceful” state of Millom’s roads took place as councillors held their monthly meeting.

County council officers will be urged to visit Millom and the surrounding areas to take stock of roads, the condition of which has been described as deplorable.

Angela Dixon, Millom Town Councillor for Newtown ward, opened the discussion by drawing attention to the huge number of potholes around Millom and Haverigg.

She said: “The roads in Millom are atrocious, as they are in Haverigg. People are going to get fed up with the state of these roads.”

With increasing numbers of motorists damaging tyres, councillors are now looking to take steps to clean up the roads.

Ray Cole, Millom Town Councillor for Newtown ward, shared his concerns and urged members of the public to take up the matter.

He said: “If you have damage caused to your car, then take a photo and send it to the county council.

“The roads around this town are a disgrace.

“We can’t make the county council come down but we can write and strongly recommend that they do come down to this town and have a look at these roads and the approach roads.

“We’re entitled to have our roads repaired just as everyone else is.”

Councillors spoke of the huge number of potholes that are blighting roads across the area in addition to the inadequate repairs that do take place.

Despite numerous petitions to Cumbria County Council calling for significant improvements to the roads, councillors believe more needs to be done to make sure council officers take the complaints seriously.

Cllr Cole said: “We have no control of the outcome. We’re in the lap of the gods - or the county council.

“They need to come down and have a look - road by road. It’s their job.

“My recommendation is that we write to the county council in the strongest possible terms to come down and see if for themselves and they will realise that we’re not making it up.

“If this winter continues as it is we will have no roads left.”

A spokesman for the county council said: “The county council is investing £3.77m in Copeland in 2015/16 on highway maintenance schemes to keep the roads well maintained and fix defects as they occur to keep road users safe.

"This year’s highways maintenance programme includes a number of highway schemes in the Millom area.

"We would be happy to meet Millom Town Council representatives to discuss any concerns they may have about the road network in this area.”
