Millom scarecrow festival

VISITORS enjoyed a collection of weird and wonderful creations celebrating Millom’s heritage.

The South Copeland Scarecrow Festival hit Millom at the weekend – with a sharp increase in the number of people attending.

The event, which took place over two days, included creations from individuals and groups vying for the approval of guest judge, Brian Crawford, mayor of Millom.

Town councillor Joan Hobbs, who helped to organise the festival, said: “It went really well. I rang most of the winners last night and they were all delighted.”

The overall winner was an entry from St George’s Residential Home, which featured two fisherman trying their luck in a paddling pool.

The private house winner was Mr and Mrs Pedley, from Lonsdale Road, with a man and his sheepdog.

The runners-up were ‘the Whitehead girls’, from Surrey Street, while third place was Sheila Watson, from Bowness Road.

First place in the schools category was Parkview Nursery, with St James Primary School coming in second.

Winner of the business category was In Bloom, the runner-up was Wellington Street Newsagent, and third place was Powerworld, Lapstone Road.

St George’s home also bagged first place in the community section, with runners-up RSPB Hodbarrow, and Haverigg Cricket Club in third place.

Cllr Hobbs said prizes would be awarded in a joint ceremony with the winners of Millom In Bloom.
