Millom rugby star leads junior fitness scheme

YOUNGSTERS could benefit from a new scheme to get them off the couch in Millom.
Junior circuit classes will take place weekly at Millom Recreation Centre, Lancashire Road, led by rugby league star James Newton.
The first class was held last Wednesday and Mr Newton said the participants threw themselves into the sessions wholeheartedly.
Mr Newton, who played for Super League side Hull FC before moving to Workington and then Whitehaven, said the scheme would help tackle the obesity crisis facing youngsters today.
“We had six or seven kids at the first session. It went really well, they all tried hard and got a good sweat on,” he said.
“It’s just to get the kids more active. A lot of kids stay in and play on Playstations and their mobile phones. There’s also the social side, they get to mix with each other as well,” he said.
The project, funded by charity North County Leisure, has extended elsewhere in Cumbria.
The classes take place every Wednesday at the centre, between 3.45 and 4.30pm, and are aimed at primary school children from the age of eight.
For more information, call the recreation centre on 01229 774985.
