Last updated at 15:23, Friday, 08 June 2012
A MILLOM man turned to drug dealing after running up a drug debt, a court has heard.
Jamie Lee Harvey appeared before Furness Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with supplying a class B drug and two counts of possession with intent to supply class B drugs.
Harvey, of Surrey Street, Millom, had been in a car in Millom with friends when police stopped the vehicle on February 16. All the occupants were searched and Harvey was found with seven bags of cannabis bush and 16 bags of the class B drug Methylmethcathinone, known as MMC.
Police also seized the 23-year-old’s mobile phone where they found several texts from people arranging to buy cannabis.
Mr John Appleby, prosecuting, said: “He had been supplying MMC and cannabis for the last three weeks in Millom.
“He admitted that his phone had text messages relating to supplying drugs.
“He said he had a major drug debt and was dealing to pay it off.”
Harvey also pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis from January 25 to February 16.
In the same car was Christopher O’Brien, who when searched by police was found with five bags of cannabis.
O’Brien, of Newton Street, Millom, told police the drugs were for personal use and he smokes around two to three bags of cannabis per week.
Appearing before Furness Magistrates’ Court O’Brien pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.
The 20-year-old failed to arrive in court to meet his bail but it later emerged he had been involved in a head-on collision while driving from Millom to court in Barrow.
O’Brien and two other people were taken to hospital following the collision at around 9.15am yesterday.
A blue Volkswagen was involved in a collision with a red Mitsubishi at the junction of the A595 and the A5093 near Thwaites.
A 71-year-old man, from Ulverston, was taken to Furness General Hospital by ambulance with a suspected broken collar bone.
O’Brien arrived in court with injuries to his face and a badly swollen right eye.
Harvey pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to supply cannabis, one count of possession of a class B drug namely methylmethcathinone and supplying a class B drug, namely cannabis.
O’Brien was fined £110 for possession of a class B drug and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Harvey was granted unconditional bail and is due to appear before Barrow Crown Court for sentence on July 6.
