Medieval mastro is Queen of the castles

FURNESS sound artists The Octopus Collective are turning back the clock with their latest guest.

Violin and recorder player Laura Cannell arrives this weekend for two live shows, one at Wray Castle near Ambleside, and the other at Dalton Castle.

The virtuoso musician, best known for her cutting edge early folk music, brings her new solo project Medieval Uprising to south Cumbria for the first time. The show presents atmospheric new interpretations of major medieval composers performed on double recorders - two played at once - and the rarely heard ‘overbowed’ violin technique, in which the bow is taken apart and wrapped around the instrument to create chords.

As part of the Medieval Uprising project, on Saturday Laura will perform at Wray Castle, a stunning Victorian Folly overlooking the shores of Windermere and the Cumbrian fells. The performance will be completely unique because Laura will be performing live improvisations based on the music she has researched.

Laura will be joined at Wray by Stuart Estell playing Concertina and violinist Alison Blunt. All three musicians will also be giving short performances around the castle during the day and may well pop up on the return ferry journey from the castle.

On Sunday, Laura will be in Dalton, where she will lead a music workshop at Dalton Castle from 3pm to 5pm, in which musicians can join her in devising a piece of medieval music which they will perform in a short concert at 6pm. The workshop is open to musicians of all abilities - just bring your acoustic instrument and join in.

Advance tickets for both events are available now at eventbrite.co.uk
