Man who armed Rhys Jones’s killer released from Cumbria prison

THE man who armed Rhys Jones’s killer has been released from Haverigg prison in Cumbria five years into a 12 year sentence.

The 11-year-old’s mum Melanie Jones has described her anger at James Yates's early release.

He supplied the gun used by Sean Mercer to shoot the innocent 11-year-old in August 2007.

He was also sentenced for assisting an offender after he helped Mercer to cover his tracks.

His original jail term of seven years was increased to 12 years in October 2009 after a review.

But last week he walked free from HMP Haverigg in Cumbria - just over five years after he was first jailed.

Mercer shot Rhys outside the Fir Tree pub in Croxteth Park before leaving the scene on his mountain bike.

Yates helped him to dispose of his bike, clothes and the gun he had provided him with minutes before the shooting. His parents, Francis and Marie, were also convicted of trying to throw murder squad detectives off the scent and hide their son’s involvement.

But police hid bugs in the Yates’s home, in Dodman Road, Croxteth and listened in as they openly talked about the murder and subsequent cover-up.

Gary Kays and Melvin Coy were released in 2011 after being jailed for their roles in the plot. Mercer was jailed for 22 years.

Have your say

I sincerely hope that this man puts his life back together and stays well out of trouble...but somehow I doubt it.
