Life jacket warning issued after ‘mad’ and busy week for lifeboat in Barrow

A LIFEBOAT has been scrambled to 10 incidents in seven days in what the RNLI are describing as a “mad and unusually busy” week.
A dramatic helicopter rescue was launched to treat a yachtsman on Wednesday and there have also been call-outs to deal with engine fires, crashes and capsized boats over the past week.
The yacht skipper required hospital treatment after showing signs of illness from shock, following a collision with a guard boat at the West of Duddon Windfarm, off Walney.
A rescue helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey was called to transport the casualty to Furness General Hospital.
He was later discharged.
The unusually high number of incidents this week has caused the total callouts for 2013 to already exceed last year’s total of 28.
John Falvey, deputy launching manager, said: “It has been a very busy week. It’s unusual for Barrow and it’s just the way things go as we might not have a call for a couple of months but then get a few in a week.
“It’s been mayhem at times. In some cases, we have come back from one job and then immediately got called out to another. It’s been mad and unusually busy.”
Just hours after the collision on Wednesday, another rescue boat was launched after the engine of a windfarm crew transfer vessel caught fire.
Eight passengers had to be ferried to another boat, while the vessel was escorted to land by the lifeboat.
Two men from Blackpool also required help when they were thrown from a dinghy in the early hours of Saturday morning near Roa Island.
Mr Falvey is urging any boat users to wear and maintain life jackets as one man involved in the dinghy incident was not wearing a fully-functioning jacket.
He said: “One man went into the sea and his life jacket didn’t go off automatically but it did work manually.
“If he didn’t (have it on) then he would have been dead. He was beginning to tire and was suffering from shock and cold.”
