Carers need more financial help
Last updated 12:06, Friday, 05 September 2008
I AM pleased to hear of support for carers from MPs and others in public life.
Many had sacrificed careers and personal lives to look after their loved ones, others had health problems of their own and yet gave unstintingly of their time and energy.
The carers’ allowance and other benefits have been introduced by the government in the last few years but need to be reviewed and other measures introduced to ensure that carers get the respite and support they need.
By giving their time freely they save the country millions of pounds a year and so any increase in the carers’ allowance would be money well spent.
I would urge local carers’ associations to lobby those in power to improve carers’ conditions. The recent Carers’ Week in June seemed to pass by without notice.
