Robert Adam Pierre Archbold appeared at Furness Magistrates’ Court on Friday 24 August charged with murdering his 77-year-old mother.

Archbold, 48, was wearing a navy blue sweater and white T-shirt with trousers and nodded from the dock to confirm his name, age and address.

He entered no plea and was remanded in custody.

Police said Ms Archbold died on Tuesday 21 August after being assaulted and attempts by paramedics to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. Ms Archbold was described locally as a well-respected vet and an accomplished potter.

Neighbour and county councillor Claire Salisbury said Ms Archbold was a “lovely” person and a talented artist.

She said: “She was incredibly artistic, a very, very talented lady. I knew her partly because she was a vet and I am a vet and she used to come into our tea room from time to time. It is not the sort of thing you expect in this sort of area.

“She was just such a lovely lady.”
