A FOUR-year-old child is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash in south Cumbria.

At around 6.45pm on Saturday March 17, a white Ford Fiesta is believed to have left the road on the A591 as it travelled between Windermere and Kendal.

Near Bannerigg Far, close to Ings, the car has left the carriageway and collided with a tree. Weather conditions at the time of the crash have been described by Cumbria Police as "poor."

There were four people in the car at the time of the crash. A 23-year-old female driver, a 28-year-old male passenger, and two four-year-old children, a boy and a girl.

The man, woman and young boy sustained minor injuries but the condition of the girl is believed to be far more serious.

Following the incident she was taken by ambulance to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, but was later transported to the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said she remains in a "critical" condition.

Any witnesses to the crash are urged to call the police on 101 to help with its ongoing investigation. They are asked to request to speak to PC 2190.
