POLICE are appealing for information after would-be car thieves tried to steal a set of keys from a South Cumbria home.

At 1.25am on Tuesday July 19, two males dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas were seen at the front door of a house in Fairview Road, Ambleside.

They appeared to be using a pole which had been placed through the letter box.

The two men were disturbed by a member of the public and they fled the scene, leaving the pole in situ and ran off towards Peggy Hill.

The pole was recovered and consisted of a broom handle and a washing pole fastened together with electrician's tape. An area search was conducted but the males were not located.

Car keys had been left on a table about three metres away within the hallway behind the front door.

It was discovered that the items used in the incident were stolen from a garden shed at a nearby residential property.

Police would like to speak to anyone in Ambleside town centre at this time who may have seen two men fitting this description.

Anyone with information should contact Cumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
