A WOMAN has been left with a critical head injury after a crash in the Lake District.

The collision happened at around 6pm last night on the A591 just north of Thirlmere. A black Volkswagen Tiguan collided with a yellow Honda motorbike.

The 44-year-old pillion passenger on the motorbike suffered serious head injuries and was placed in an induced coma before being flown to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance where her condition has been described as critical but stable. She was given a blood transfusion on the way.

The 55-year-old male motorcyclist received minor injuries and the 28-year-old female driver of the Tiguan was uninjured.

The man and the woman on the motorbike were from Cornwall while the driver of the Volkswagen is from North Yorkshire.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
