A WOMAN was airlifted to Furness General Hospital in Barrow after suffering an ankle injury.

Nine members of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team were involved when the team was called to the assistance of a female walker who had fallen and sustained an ankle injury while walking above Goats Hawse on the western flanks of Coniston Old Man yesterday afternoon.

Due to the potential protracted carry out the team requested an air ambulance and assistance from neighbouring Duddon & Furness Mountain Rescue Team.

The woman was treated for her injuries by team members and staff from North West Air Ambulance and stretchered approximately 1km to the waiting helicopter which had to land some distance away due to adverse cloud conditions.

She was subsequently airlifted to Furness General Hospital.
