A LAKES hotel is set to undergo a multi-million pound refurbishment as it sets its sights on becoming a world-renowned resort.

From this week the doors will close at the Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa on Windermere for four months.

The hotel, south of Ambleside, will not reopen until April when a £16m transformation has been successfully completed.

The hotel's owners, English Lakes Hotels Resorts and Venues, a family-run company, are determined to turn their idyllic lakeside spot into a worldwide attraction.

Simon Berry, chairman and managing director of the company, said: “It is a really exciting new chapter for us here at Low Wood Bay.

"This stunning building has been here for over 300 years and this will be the biggest change it has gone through in its history.

"The Lake District is a uniquely beautiful holiday destination and we’re creating an exceptional, stand-out resort from which to enjoy it.

"We want to make something truly special, bringing modern, top quality facilities to the area but without compromising the integrity or charm of this historic building; we really feel we have achieved that with these plans.

"We can’t wait to welcome our guests, both old and new, to see their reactions."

The historic property will have all of its rooms completely refitted. New outdoor leisure facilities and a new restaurant concept, Blue Smoke, will be built.

After the initial renovation has been completed in April, work will continue on the development of a further 32 suites and studio rooms to add to to the hotel's offering.

The hotel group has worked closely with the Lake District National Park Authority in a bid to progress the plans and create a world-class destination, while remaining in keeping with the area and using local connections and expertise.

The hotel's ambition is to enhance the experience of a visitor from the outset.

A new entrance will sweep guests up to the hotel towards the car park.

One of the most significant investments is in the luxurious spa which will open in the summer. Guests will be able to relax in an outdoor heated infinity pool, sauna, steam room and Canadian hot tubs with views over the lake and mountains.

The extensive fitness suite will also feature state of the art equipment and an express salon.

The introduction of the innovative Blue Smoke’dining concept will provide British produce within a South American wood fired grill - the first of its kind in the area.

A final addition, a luxury accommodation block complete with private bar, lounge and roof terrace, is also scheduled to open later in the year.
