A SOUTH Cumbria road will be shut from today as work to improve water quality on Windermere resumes.

A rolling road closure will be in effect on the A592 until April to allow United Utilities to upgrade two wastewater treatment works.

The closure will start from Tower Wood and will move along in sections of around 300 metres towards Low Moor Crag.

Engineering work began on the A592 in November to lay a section of a new sewer but the work was put on hold over the Christmas period.

The £40 million project is to reduce the amount of phosphorous in Windermere by stopping the sewer network from overflowing into the lake during heavy storms.

Phosphorous can cause algal blooms and reduce the amount of oxygen in the water, which severely impacts aquatic life.

Pippa Smith, wastewater asset manager for United Utilities, said: "We will do everything we possibly can to minimise inconvenience.

"Ultimately, we want this project to create a lasting legacy for the area, supporting wildlife, tourism and a thriving local economy."

Closure details

The diversion for all vehicles during the project will be via the A591 and A590.

Access during the road closure will be not be affected for pedestrians and cyclists.

A shuttle bus will run between Windermere and Newby Bridge as Stagecoach is unable to run six services on double decker buses.

Passengers will need to change at Newby Bridge to connect with the shuttle bus to Windermere or with the X6 back to Ulverston and Barrow.

The shuttle bus will run on weekdays and Saturdays from Windermere at 6.35am, 8.47am, 10.56am, 12.56pm, 2.56pm and 5.56pm, and from Newby Bridge at 8am, 10.09am, 12.09pm, 2.09pm and 5.09pm.

The road closure will be lifted during the half-term holidays in February, and then reinstated until Easter.

The water quality work is due to take place in phases over three successive years, with the scheme due for completion by March 2020.
