NINE people from the South Lakes have been admitted to hospital after taking illegal blue pills similar to valium.

Police have issued a warning after a number of incidents in Windermere and Kendal involving the misuse of the pills were reported.

In the past six weeks, nine people have been taken to hospital in a serious condition after taking the tablets.

Police have warned that in extreme cases taking the pills could be fatal.

Detective Inspector Helen Ellis, of Cumbria Police, said: "These drugs are often bought illegally on the internet from abroad, and sold by drug suppliers on the streets for as little as 50 pence per tablet.

"The strength of the drugs can vary widely and there is no objective way to identify the strength of them prior to consumption.

"This can lead to overdose amongst users and although those admitted to hospital have made a recovery, the consequences to health are serious and can even cause death.

"Cumbria Police remain dedicated to the targeting of drugs supply and anyone with information should contact police or Crimestoppers to help keep these drugs out of our communities."

Valium can be used to treat anxiety disorders, muscle spasms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

A similar appeal was issued by police to the public in July after five men were taken ill in Carlisle following suspected use of blue valium pills.

Anyone with information about the supply of the drug should call police on 101. Crimestoppers may also be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
