A REGIONAL brewer and pub owner has confirmed proposals to close its distribution depot in South Cumbria in response to rising costs and changes in the industry.

Frederic Robinson Ltd, the Cheshire-based family brewers, has announced that up to 10 jobs have been placed at risk of redundancy following a review of its distribution centre in Backbarrow.

In a letter sent out to pub tenants, seen by the Evening Mail, the brewery's managing directors, cousins Oliver and William Robinson, cited higher costs for the proposed closure.

The letter said: "Due to ongoing requirements to make changes in our industry, our estate, and the impact of higher costs we have identified that it is necessary to make changes within our overall logistics operations."

The firm's bosses insisted the decision to close the distribution centre did not affect their commitment to the brewery's network of pubs across Cumbria.

Up to seven positions could be created which it is hoped can be offered to affected employees who are willing to relocate. Robinson's has around 300 pubs across Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and North Wales.

In a statement issued to the Evening Mail, a spokesperson said: "Frederic Robinson Ltd confirmed that a proposal is currently being examined that could result in the closure of its distribution centre at Backbarrow.

"We are in the process of discussing these proposed changes with our employees concerned and until these meetings have been concluded no final decisions have been made.

"We are committed to continuing our investment program in our pub estate and supporting our free house customers in Cumbria."
