HOUSING is at the heart of Lib Dem policy as they launched their local election campaign today (16).
South Lakeland candidates were joined in Kendal by former party leader and Westmoreland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.
Their manifesto - Putting South Lakeland First - was launched at an affordable housing project in Dowkers Lane. The party says it wants to build 1,000 more affordable homes and 300 extra care units in the district by 2025.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats in South Lakeland, Giles Archibald, said: "I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved over the past twelve years.
“Over 1,000 affordable houses built, kerbside recycling now available across the district, huge investment in our local communities, and thanks to our strong partnership with local businesses, South Lakeland is now the fastest growing economy in Cumbria.
“But it is the people we serve who are at the heart of this manifesto – from the families who have affordable roofs over their heads thanks to our affordable housing policy, to the grandmother who can receive hospital treatment close to home thanks to our health campaigns."
Mr Farron said: "We want to carry on protecting our hospital and look after our health services. We want an environment which is green and clean and accessible for future generations and want to continue to create jobs to allow people to be able to stay and make a living here."
Elections for South Lakeland District Council will take place on Thursday May 3.
