NERVES were plain to see as A-Level students waited for the results that could determine their future.

Fortunately at The Lakes School, in Troutbeck Bridge, those fears proved to be unfounded.

This year 85 per cent of students got the results they needed to go down the traditional route of university.

Headteacher Andy Cunningham said: "We are really pleased that our students go far and wide to good universities."

Mr Cunningham felt that the great results the Lakes School got this year were a reflection of their recent Ofsted inspection, where the sixth form was rated as "good".

He said: "We pride ourselves in meeting the needs of our students, and seeing them achieving."

The school was very proud to see that all students were able to get into first choice universities, apprenticeships or employment opportunities.

One of this year's star achievers was Sam Richards, 18, from Bowness. He got an A* and two As in chemistry, biology and physics.

Other top achievers were Will Crisp and Penny Critchley who received outstanding results, A*, A, A and A*, A* and A respectively.

After getting through his exams, Mr Richards is planning to take a gap year, heading off to Mexico in the new year.

He said: "I'm following a passion, I'm hoping to apply to Cambridge to study natural sciences next year.

"The year was particularly difficult because when I chose my A-Levels I picked English literature and drama. I had to go through A1 and A2 physics in one year."

Although still unsure about his future, Mr Richards is weighing up the idea of becoming a theoretical physicist.

Mr Richards is most pleased about his result in chemistry. He said: "I felt I could have done better in my GCSEs, so I'm very proud with the A* I got."
