A MULTI-MILLION pound project will help to re-tell the story of one of the world's most romantic poets.

In April 2020, the spirit of Lake District bard William Wordsworth will be celebrated in spectacular style to coincide with the 250th anniversary of his birth.

To mark the unique event, Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Trust have begun planning an exciting new project, in conjunction with the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Reimagining Wordsworth will expand and modernise the Wordsworth Museum and make Dove Cottage more authentic.

It will look to open up new green spaces, including a sensory garden, a woodland trail and improved access for all visitors.

Trust director Michael McGregor said: "Reimagining Wordsworth will create new ways of enjoying Wordsworth's poetry, in the place where it was inspired and largely written".

Mr McGregor will be overseeing the transformation at the site Wordsworth called "the loveliest spot that man hath ever found."

The team is also hoping they can secure £1 million worth of donations from members of the public before March 2018 to unlock up to £4 million of funding from the Heritage Fund.

Grasmere locals will also be able to benefit from the redesigned cafe and terrace which will overlook the cottage and offer a tranquil place of relaxation.

Library gigs to be autumn highlights in South Cumbria

New activities will also take Wordsworth’s poetry out to communities across Cumbria, following the artist's wish for his poetry to make us "wiser, better and happier".

Dove Cottage attracts swarms of visitors each year and according to the Trust, the picturesque site "fed" the poet's inspiration and helped him to write some of the most famous poetry in the English language such as Daffodils and The Prelude.
