A GROUP of volunteers cracked "the most formidable quiz team in the country" on a popular TV show tonight.

Six volunteers from South Lakes Citizens Advice appeared on BBC Two quiz show Eggheads tonight and won.

The team dubbed the Cabbies, from South Lakes Citizens Advice - which has branches in Ulverston, Windermere and Kendal - defeated "possibly the greatest quiz team in Britain".

The challengers won £1,000 for the cash-strapped charity through their quiz show win.

The Cabbies got four of the five team members through to the final by knocking out various Eggheads in the individual rounds.

In the final they answered correctly that a po' boy is a traditional sandwich in America.

Congratulating the challengers, presenter Jeremy Vine said: "You just simply cut them to ribbons. You overwhelmed them bit by bit. You were methodical. You can't say it was luck, you were just better."

The successful team consisted of Sue Thompson, Steve Troake, Christina Greenwood, Dan Hudson and Gareth Eve. Jayne Malley acted as a reserve for the team.

Remarkably the team did little in the way of preparation, apart from one pub quiz. Only one member of the team regularly attends pub quizzes.

The team filmed for the show back in November in Glasgow. They even got a selfie with Jeremy Vine at Glasgow Central station.

The Cabbie said they had an amazing experience and enjoyed working with Mr Vine, the Eggheads and the production team.
