A SOUTH Cumbria schoolboy has won a major UK photographic competition at his first attempt.

Nine-year-old Rowan Ashworth's stunning Sunset Explorer won the Youth Living the View category in the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

The Ambleside Primary School pupil captured a stunning shot of his father, Steve Ashworth, climbing in Scotland.

Rowan used his father’s Nikon D750 camera to take the picture while the family was on holiday at Hushinish, on the Isle of Harris, this summer.

Landscape Photographer of the Year celebrates all that is great about the British landscape and showcases the work of many talented photographers, inspiring visitors to experience the joys of British landscapes at first hand.

The prestigious annual competition was founded in 2006 by Charlie Waite, one of the world’s most respected landscape photographers, and is sponsored by Visit Britain.

Rowan’s photograph will be exhibited at London’s Waterloo, Britain’s busiest railway station, from November 21.

The exhibition has become a focal point for many of the quarter-of-a-million visitors who pass through the station each day.

It was held at the National Theatre for seven years, and became one of the venue’s most popular exhibitions before moving to London Waterloo in 2014, the first show of its kind to be held at the station.

Rowan, an Ambleside AC fellrunners member, and his family have been invited to the opening and he will be awarded a copy of a book containing all the winning entries.

Rowan, who puts some of his photos on his own blog, said: "It's brilliant, I was very pleased to win as it was my first photography competition.

"I stayed up late to get the photo, until 11pm, and I didn't know if I was going to get it."

He is now planning to enter some more photography competitions.
