A MAN from South Cumbria has been identified as the motorist killed in a Lake District crash.

The emergency services were called to Wrynose Pass at Little Langdale near Ambleside at 11.42am on Wednesday to reports of a one-vehicle crash in which a man died.

Police have today confirmed the identity of the man David Otway, aged 52, from Cheshire. He was driving a white Volkswagen Touareg. Specially trained officers are supporting his family at this time. Mum Ruth, sister Rachel, and sons Matthew, Peter, and Max, have been devastated by the loss of David.

The family have released the following statement in tribute to Mr Otway: “David was born and brought up in Kendal and is very well known in the area. He attended Stramongate School and later Kendal Grammar School.

“During the 70s and 80s he was a playing member of the under 19 Kendal Rugby Squad and grew up through the juniors at Netherfield Cricket Club through to the first team.

“His work for the Netherfield club continued when he left this area in many ways, particularly arranging and looking after the professionals who played at the club.

“He was a member of MCC committees locally and nationally. And continued his work over the last few years as coach and manager of the very successful Alderley Edge Junior teams where his younger son Max played.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses that may have been on Wrynose Pass and saw the incident. Anyone with information should contact Cumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
