FAMILIES can enjoy a celebration of the countryside and rural life when a south Cumbria village stages an agricultural event on Saturday.

Lowick Show will feature everything from cattle, sheep, light horses and heavy horses, to working sheep dogs, hound trails and junior sports.

This is the 159th Lowick Show, which is affectionately known as 'L'al Royal', and is one of the last family days out of the summer holidays.

The showfield, which is close to Lowick Bridge, will play host to junior track races from around 1pm with sprint and lap events for boys and girls. The young competitors enter at the track.

The children's pet classes and novelty dog show are a hit with the public, with entries also taken on the day. Children aged 12 and under can bring a pet along to the show for the competition which takes place at around 2pm. This is followed by the novelty dog show at 2.30pm. The dog classes are; best child handler 12 and under, best rescue dog, most obedient dog, dog in best condition and the dog the judge would most like to take home.

The traditional sport of Cumberland and Westmorland wresting is also a feature of the event with the competitions getting under way from around 3pm.

There is also home produce and a stick competition alongside trade stands, children's fairground games and bouncy castles.

The tug of war, with competitors from Lowick Young Farmers, the show committee and other folk from the farming community, is expected to take place at around 3.30pm.

For the first time the show holds a concours d'elegance horse class. This is a competition of elegance, where the riders wear beautiful outfits. This class is due to take place at around 3.30pm.

Acting show secretary Kathy Edmondson said: "Lowick Show is a great day out for all the family. It is one of the last shows of the year.

"It is community orientated, full of fun and an insight into rural life."

Gates open to the public from 8.30am and parking is free.

The showfield is on the A5084 between Lowick Green and Lowick Bridge.

Adult tickets are £6 and £2.50 for children under 16. Youngsters under five go free.

Following the show, the evening is rounded off with the show dance. There is live music and a fully serviced licensed bar and catering. It starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 in advance or £8 on the night.
