A FINANCIAL boost has been offered to the woman who can smash a Lake District running record at a popular event.

Grasmere Senior Guides Race has always been one of the highlights of the annual Grasmere Sports and Show and for many years Pete Bland Sports have kindly offered an additional bonus prize of £500 to anyone who can beat the current male record time.

This reward has now been matched for the ladies, with the same amount being offered this year to the next woman who beats the female record.

Christine Shaw Grasmere Sports director Christine Shaw said: “I happened to be discussing this very fact with Simon Theobald one of the directors of local solicitors Thomson Hayton Winkley, and a keen fell runner himself.

"Imagine my delight when he later phoned to say he had told fellow director John Cooke what I had discussed and they were willing to put up a bonus £500 to the next lady beating the female record."

Grasmere Sports is set to be held on August 28 and has been going for 166 years, unbroken except for the two world wars.

Participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling, Fell Running and Hound Trails. Visit the event website at www.grasmeresports.com or follow organisers on Twitter at www.twitter.com/grasmeresports for more information.
