THE Lake District has dominated a list of the most popular destinations searched for by walkers.

Of the 1.4 million destination searches carried out on the online version of the Ordnance Survey last year, four of the country's top 10 locations were in Cumbrian beauty spots.

Keswick came second with 3,374 searches; Ambleside was fifth after recording 2,165 searches; Coniston made eighth with 1,814 searches; and Patterdale just made the top 10 with 1,590 searches.

Nick Giles, managing director of Ordnance Survey Leisure, said: "Great Britain is a beautiful nation and we are blessed with amazing areas which we can easily access and enjoy.

"I am not overly surprised by the majority of the locations in the search results, as they focus on popular visitor hot spots and National Parks."
