The RSPCA is warning of the dangers of dogs being off their leads around wildlife after a swan was injured in Bowness this month.

The swan was picked up by the RSPCA in the bay area of Bowness on Wednesday, April 6.

The animal had sustained significant injuries to the back of its neck.

While the incident was not witnessed, vets believe the injuries may have been caused by a dog.

It was taken to the Kendal College Animal Rescue Centre to receive treatment.

It has made a full recovery and was released on the shores of Windermere on April 18.

RSPCA Inspector, Will Lamping, said: "Owners should always keep their dog – no matter how predictable they may feel they are – on a lead around wildlife to avoid things like this happening."

"I've attended many dead and injured swans around the Lakes before which are believed to have been caused by dogs."
