THE assassination of the MP Jo Cox has reminded us how much we value our liberty and security.

Easy Access to our elected representatives is a fundamental part of democracy. Our hearts go out to the family of Jo Cox, a wonderful person who just wanted to help people.

This terrible killing has also brought to light the amount of abuse that MPs have to suffer, much of it via social media. We all condemn this tide of abusive argumentation that intimidates rather than convinces.

As I take on my new role as leader of SLDC, I cannot help but reflect how fortunate we are in South Lakeland. No matter how passionate the debate or how certain we are of our beliefs, we air our differences with courtesy and respect.

We get very little mail that is offensive and it is rare in council meetings or in cabinet for tempers to be raised.

Indeed although we represent different parties, there is much that your elected representatives agree on. We all are motivated by a desire to serve the community and are committed to coming together to solve problems.

A great example of this is the agreement we have been able to reach with the local Ulverston community for the transfer of responsibility for the Coro and the markets. This is an emotional issue, but as result of a reasoned review of the options, we have arrived at a solution, soon to go live, which I fervently hope will secure its long term future.

Politicians and council officers are dedicated public servants who care deeply about the community. It is encouraging that in this part of Britain they are treated with respect.
